I have learned that the best way to honor my mother is by serving and helping others.

The work of a mother is hard, yet too often unheralded work. I am grateful that there is a day set aside to honor mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, grandmothers, and women in all walks of life. My mother played a crucial role in my upbringing, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her influence.

She shaped my life by being my greatest teacher, biggest supporter and by demonstrating through her actions the importance of charity and service. How do I try to repay and honor her for all of her sacrifices? I have learned that the best way to honor my mother is by serving and helping others.

I recently returned from a visit to the Philippines where I met Vilma Lumanas. She sells fried bananas from a little shop in front of her home. She is a dedicated, loving, and innovative mother. Through small loans, Vilma purchased supplies and a refrigerator for cold drinks. She improved her shop from just selling fried bananas to adding other confectionery items. Vilma always repays her loans on time. She feels that the loans have been a great blessing to her and her children. Through repaying these loans she knows that others will be blessed as she has been.

Vilma’s greatest pride is her two daughters who have recently graduated from college. Her daughters are grateful for the hard work and sacrifices of their mother, giving them every opportunity she never had. During our visit, she continually expressed gratitude for Mentors Philippines and the mentors who have served her. Because of the training and guidance Vilma has received, she not only is able to manage her business finances, but her personal finances as well. Vilma was so excited to show me the new home she is building.

Women make up 90% of the clients of Mentors International. Most of these are mothers who bear the seemingly unconquerable task of raising a family, often times on their own. These mothers all demonstrate the same basic wants for their families; to give them a better life. These women may be culturally different, but like you and I, they feel joy and pain, they laugh and cry, and they deeply love their children.

A small loan provides the catalyst for big changes. Your support has helped over 4.3 million individuals over the years. More mothers are waiting for their chance. This Mother’s Day, honor your mother and serve another by giving to mothers across the globe. We will send your mother a heartfelt card so that she will know of your generosity and gift in her honor. Please know of our gratitude for doing whatever you can.
