The Need is Great in the Philippines
The Philippines is a chain of 7000+ islands southwest of China and directly south of Taiwan. Although there is relatively low unemployment in the Philippines, the underemployment percent sits at 18% with up to 75% in some of the more rural regions. Several major typhoons have impacted the growth of their economy over the last several years. While there have been great strides made in the last decade in lowering the overall rate of Filipinos living in extreme poverty, 64% of Filipinos still live under the overall poverty line on $5.50 per day or less. This is not enough to survive.
The Philippines was the first country that Mentors International started serving in. The Davao region opened up two new branches in the cities of Malita and Bansalan during 2018. We are also in the process of opening up a new branch in the city of Cagayan de Oro scheduled for the spring of 2019. While there are many challenges in the Philippines our mentors are working harder than ever to make a sustainable impact on the lives of those in their communities. After serving in the Philippines for 29 years, our dedicated team is very knowledgeable and experienced. Watch Mentors Philippines Branch video to learn more.
