More Than a Gift: The Goat That Paid for School

Regina, a 39-year-old mother of four, always had the desire to support her family. But like many women in her village in Malawi, she lacked a stable way to turn her small income into starting a business. Her husband worked hard, but “making ends meet” was a daily struggle that often left their children’s secondary school fees out of reach.

Everything changed when Regina met her mentor, Chifundo.

Through the Giving Machine Program, Regina received goats, but the business training she received from Chifundo was the real catalyst. Together, they developed a strategic action plan. Regina didn’t just wait for her goats to grow; she started making and selling African cakes, creating immediate income.

Then, the livestock “multiplied” her efforts. In early January, her goat had three kids. For Regina, these aren’t just animals; they are tuition payments.

“When I see goats, I see my children completing school all the way to university,” Regina says.

Today, Regina has doubled her monthly income. She has already purchased a sewing machine and is preparing to learn tailoring to further diversify her services. Regina isn’t just surviving; she is building an empire of self-reliance, one stitch, and one sale at a time.
