Just outside the city of Masaya, Nicaragua, Dionisia and Julio run a small family farm. When Mentors International introduced its business mentoring program to their community, they eagerly signed up, ready to learn and grow, and excited for a new opportunity.
Their first business classes were a true “lightbulb moment”. They applied these new business principles and discovered a new perspective on entrepreneurship.
Mentoring in Action
Under the guidance of their mentor, Jonathan, they learned to manage their finances more effectively, establish a family budget, and track both business and personal expenses. They also learned how to set fair and competitive prices for their produce by comparing market offerings and discovering innovative ways to reach a wider customer base.
After several months of training, Dionisia and Julio were ready when the Giving Machines program provided them with two piglets. Equipped with a solid business plan, they integrated livestock into their operations, eager about the potential to increase their income and secure a better future.
With great care, one pig grew to over 200 pounds. They sold it for $280, using the profit to purchase two more piglets. Their next goal is to expand their farm by acquiring a larger plot where they can plant beans, corn, and vegetables to supply small distributors.
“We are deeply grateful for the support provided by our mentor, Jonathan. He has instilled in us great confidence and taught us invaluable technical skills for running our business. We also want to thank the generous donors who make mentoring programs like this possible.” – Dionisia
Jonathan, Their Mentor, shares, “Dionisia and Julio have shown how discipline brings great results. Through their determination and hard work, they’ve significantly uplifted their family’s well-being.”
