Today, Esther Awua is a bright and happy mother able to provide for her three children living in Abomosu, Ghana. Life has not been easy for Esther. When she was a teenager she had to drop out of school because both of her parents passed away. Esther was able to get a job with a baker. She worked very hard, learned everything that she could while only earning $3.00 GHC ($0.54 USD) for her daily wages. She did this to survive.
In Esther’s words, “Life was unbearable and I wanted to make a change.” Esther desired to start her own baking business so she could better provide the needs for her children. She was broke, and had nowhere to go for assistance. All she needed was some flour and an oven, but it seemed impossible.
One day, two men from Mentors Ghana came to the shop where Esther worked. They spoke with the owner about how they support individuals and groups to grow their businesses. Esther got their information and contacted them. She told them her story and of her desire to provide for her family. Esther eagerly started attending the Mentors Ghana business training classes.
Now with a big smile, Esther says, “Here I am today. I have established my own bakery with one employee. I now earn over 20,00 GHC ($3.60 USD) a day. We eat well balanced and nutritious meals, my kids and family are proud of me. I can afford most of their necessities in life. Together with my family, we say a very big thank you to Mentors Ghana, may God richly bless Mentors Ghana for helping the less privileged in the world.”
